Description
ABSTRACT James Carey offers two models of communication in his 1988 book, Communication As Culture; Essays on media and society. White Carey typically speaks to media specialists, Carey's models offer educators several different methods for sharing information with students, educators can either continue to operate in Carey's transmission format of "sender/receiver" or move towards a more interactive paradigm of participants and shared experience by utilizing his ritual form of communication. In an age when pressure continues to mount from government policies, state and local mandates, and/or administrative expectations for quantitative performance of students, classroom experience points to Carey's ritual model as a positive model of how to build multiple voices into the process of reflection and praxis. This paper will argue that as pressure to perform according to expected levels builds for educators, Carey's ritual model which incorporates a multitude of voices and participants in the reflective practitioner process will strengthen the learning community through shared experiences.
